Depo Provera Injection

Depo Provera Injection containing the active ingredient Medroxyprogesterone is considered a progestins or a long acting reversible hormonal contraceptive birth control drug. The hormone works by preventing ovulation and causes changes in the cervical mucus and uterine lining making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for fertilized eggs to attach to the uterus. Some women may also use the medication to reduce pain caused by endometriosis.

Depo Provera Injection should be used once every 3 months (13 weeks) on the upper arm or buttocks or as directed by a doctor. The first injection should be given during the first 5 days of the menstrual period to ensure the patient is not pregnant. The medication should be given by a health care provider at an office or clinic. If you are administering the injection at home, do it exactly as instructed by your health care professional. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The medication can be used as birth control but will not be 100% efficient.

Patients using Depo Provera Injection may encounter unwanted side effects such as: nausea, headaches, dizziness, hot flashes, acne, hair loss, irritation or pain at injection site, breast tenderness.

Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.

Depo Provera Injection is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.

The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. Depo Provera Injection is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
