Enbrel is an injectible biologic drug that may be prescribed to treat rheumatic conditions, such as ankylosing spondylitis, plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and rheumatoid or juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Some people have too much tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and, although it is a part of your immune system, the increased levels cause the painful inflammation associated with these conditions.

Taking Enbrel as directed blocks the production of TNF proteins to reduce the levels in your body in order to suppress the inflammation process and provide you with relief so you can carry on with your day. Your healthcare provider will administer the first injection of Enbrel and you can be instructed on how to properly inject yourself at home if you feel comfortable doing so.

Ankylosing spondylitis, plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and rheumatoid or juvenile idiopathic arthritis are considered autoimmune rheumatic disorders. For some individuals, your immune system appears to be stuck in the “On” position. It begins to attack your own tissues because it thinks your body is under attack. Your immune response is to cause inflammation as a way to contain the threat and start the healing process. Chronic inflammation can damage the tissue and cartilage that your body needs for moving joints smoothly so it’s important to receive treatment before the damage has progressed too far.

Psoriatic arthritis is a form of arthritis that affects some people who have psoriasis — a condition that features red patches of skin topped with silvery scales. Most people develop psoriasis first and are later diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis can cause swelling, stiffness and pain in and around the joints, cause nail changes and overall fatigue. Psoriatic arthritis can develop slowly with mild symptoms, or it can develop quickly and be severe. Early recognition, diagnosis and treatment of psoriatic arthritis can help prevent or limit extensive joint damage that occurs in later stages of the disease.

There is no cure for any of these conditions, but Enbrel will afford you the ability to function without pain and stiffness.

Your doctor should be made aware of other health conditions you have that could interfere with taking Enbrel. Discuss any drugs and OTC medicine you are taking, including herbal or homeopathic remedies and vitamin supplements as they could affect the efficacy of Enbrel or cause unintended side effects.

Taking Enbrel can compromise the body’s ability to fight infections, so it is important to try to avoid contact with infections, particularly chicken pox.

Possible side effects of Enbrel: lack of energy, runny or stuffy nose: nausea or vomiting.
