Hydab is a cancer-fighting antineoplastic medication that kills abnormal cells in the body. It comes packaged as a pill, and should be swallowed whole with or without food.
Cancers form when some cells within the body multiply uncontrollably and abnormally. The exact way in which Hydab works is unclear, but it appears to interfere with the synthesis of genetic material (DNA) inside cells. It therefore stops cells from growing and multiplying, which stops the growth of abnormal tissue.
Hydab is prescribed to treat cancers of the skin, ovaries, neck, or head. These include certain types of leukemia (chronic myeloid leukemia), as well as squamous cell carcinomas and melanomas. Hydab may also be used for managing a blood disorder called sickle cell anemia, which causes red blood cells to become rigid and ineffective. In either case, Hydab will target the abnormal cancer or sickle cells and kill them so that healthy cells can flourish.
Be sure to tell your doctor if you have ongoing problem with anemia, bone marrow production, or blood platelet production before you start taking Hydrea. It is also important to advise your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease, or HIV/AIDS, or if you are currently receiving radiation therapy. Hydab may increase the risk of other cancers, so you will want to discuss the potential advantages and disadvantages with your doctor.
Certain immunosuppressant, anti-fungal, and anti-viral drugs are known to interact negatively with Hydab, as are many others. Because of this, they should only be taken under the instruction of your doctor.
Hydab can also affect normal, healthy cells, particularly those that multiply quickly, such as normal healthy blood cells. The resulting decrease in the production of white blood cells may cause patients to become more susceptible to infection. Regular blood tests are needed to monitor the levels of blood cells during treatment.
Possible Side Effects of Hydab: hair loss, skin irritation and/or peeling, stomach upset including constipation, diarrhea, and vomiting, headache, dizziness, swelling in the hands or feet.
