Nexium belongs to a class of medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These medicines work by decreasing the volume of acid present in the stomach. Conditions treated with Nexium include GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), erosive esophagitis and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. In some cases, physicians may prescribe Nexium for use in combination with antibiotics to treat Helicobacter pylori (a stomach infection), and patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be given this medication on a short term basis to lessen the risk of stomach ulcers.
Due to the fact that Nexium is used to treat a variety of conditions, the exact dosage required can vary, based on the condition being treated, as well as other factors. In all cases, your physician will tell you how much you need to take.
Adults treating gastroesophageal reflux disease are often directed to take 20 mg by mouth, once per day for a period of 4 to 8 weeks. The healing of erosive esophagitis may require 20 mg to 40 mg, once per day for 4 to 8 weeks, and the maintenance of healing generally requires 20 mg, taken once per day for a period of 6 months. Other conditions may require different doses, and you must always follow the instructions given by your physician.
Patients who are undergoing treatment with Nexium may experience some side effects, including: nausea, drowsiness, constipation, pain in the abdomen, dryness in the mouth.
Notify your physician if you are concerned about any side effects. Rare and serious reactions may occur in some cases. You must immediately seek medical attention if you notice seizures, cramps affecting the muscles, weakness, blisters, severe diarrhea or any other severe symptoms.
Patients treated with multiple daily doses of Nexium for a prolonged period of time may be at an increased risk of bone fractures. Ask your physician about all of the risks associated with treatment before taking Nexium.
There is a risk of severe diarrhea (clostridium difficile diarrhea) associated with taking this medicine. Seek medical care straight away if you suffer from severe or prolonged diarrhea.
