Tobradex is a form of antibiotic, which is used to treat certain types of bacterial infections. The active ingredients presents in Tobradex are Tobramycin and Dexamethasone. Dexamethasone help to treat any swelling of the eye which has been associated with bacterial infection. Tobramycin belongs to a class of drugs called aminoglycoside antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Dexamethasone works by reducing swelling.

Eye inflammation can occur as a result of trauma to the eye during eye surgery and is caused by the release of substances that are important in the immune system. These substances cause blood vessels to widen, resulting in the affected area becoming red, swollen and painful.

Tobramycin belongs to a group of antibiotics called aminoglycosides. These antibiotics have the ability to kill a wide variety of bacteria. Tobramycin works by affecting the production of certain proteins by bacteria. These proteins are necessary for the bacteria's survival. Tobramycin causes the bacteria to produce abnormal and faulty proteins, which ultimately kills the bacteria. The combination of these medicines is applied directly into the eye after cataract surgery, to reduce inflammation and prevent infection.

Patients using Tobradex may encounter unwanted side effects such as: burning sensation after putting in the eye drops: headache, blurred vision, sensation of something in the eye(s), pain, itching or irritation in the eye(s), dry eye(s), inflammation of the surface of the eye (keratitis); increased pressure in the eyeball, runny nose; sore throat.
